Foundations

Beneath every wound, a foundation.

Where It Hurts" starts from the pain you feel right now. This page digs deeper, into three more fundamental things: a new life growing in God, how this body of flesh and blood — and the natural self — is healed, and the source of all healing, the love of the Lord Jesus Christ. 71 passages, in Chinese and English.

Building the Spiritual Life

Healing is not only mending what broke. It is a new life beginning to grow.

The deepest layer of healing in Scripture is not in the body or the emotions but in the life within a person that is joined to God. That life has a beginning (new birth), needs roots (abiding in Christ), needs food (the word of God), needs others (being built up together), and slowly bears fruit. It is not a single event but a lifetime of growing.

1.1

The beginning: born anew The beginning: born anew

Jesus told Nicodemus that unless a person is born anew, they cannot see the kingdom of God. Spiritual life is not achieved by effort; it is a new life received from God. Anyone in Christ is a new creation — not the old self improved, but a genuinely new beginning.

Jesus answered him, “Most certainly, I tell you, unless one is born anew, he can’t see God’s Kingdom.”

Jesus answered, “Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born of water and spirit, he can’t enter into God’s Kingdom. That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

not by works of righteousness which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,

having been born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, through the word of God, which lives and remains forever.

1.2

Roots: abiding in Christ Roots: abiding in Christ

A branch cannot bear fruit by itself. Jesus used the image of the vine to show that the strength of spiritual life lies not in how much we do but in whether we stay joined to Him. Rooted in Him, a life can stand, and is not uprooted by the storm.

Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me. I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

As therefore you received Christ Jesus, the Lord, walk in him, rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, even as you were taught, abounding in it in thanksgiving.

but his delight is in Yahweh’s law. On his law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water, that produces its fruit in its season, whose leaf also does not wither. Whatever he does shall prosper.

“Blessed is the man who trusts in Yahweh, and whose confidence is in Yahweh. For he will be as a tree planted by the waters, who spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes, but its leaf will be green; and will not be concerned in the year of drought. It won’t cease from yielding fruit.

Food: the word of God Food: the word of God

A newborn needs milk, and spiritual life likewise needs feeding. Scripture says a person does not live by bread alone but by every word from the mouth of God. Read a passage each day — not to finish a task, but so the life within can be nourished.

as newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the Word, that with it you may grow,

But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”

It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.

Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

1.4

Built together: growing among others Built together: growing among others

Spiritual life is never solitary. The early church "continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer." Like living stones we are built into a spiritual house, and grow toward the stature of Christ through one another’s support, correction, and forgiveness.

They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer.

You also, as living stones, are built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, Christ; from whom all the body, being fitted and knit together through that which every joint supplies, according to the working in measure of each individual part, makes the body increase to the building up of itself in love.

Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good works, not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as you see the Day approaching.

being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone; in whom the whole building, fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together for a habitation of God in the Spirit.

1.5

Fruit: being shaped into His likeness Fruit: being shaped into His likeness

The sign of a growing life is not the size of one’s gifts but the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience… It grows slowly; it cannot be performed. He who began a good work in us will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

But we all, with unveiled face seeing the glory of the Lord as in a mirror, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord, the Spirit.

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.

Healing for Flesh and Blood

A person is spirit, soul, and body together, and God cares for the whole.

"Flesh and blood" carries two meanings in Scripture: the body of flesh and blood that tires and falls ill, and the "natural person" who lives by instinct, appetite, and self-reliance alone. Scripture holds out healing for both. Weakness of body God tends through prayer, through rest, and through those who heal; and the natural self must be renewed by the Spirit before it can find life and peace.

2.1

The whole person: spirit, soul, and body The whole person: spirit, soul, and body

Paul prayed that believers’ "spirit, soul, and body" would be preserved whole. Scripture never treats the body as secondary; John prayed that Gaius would "prosper in all things and be healthy, even as your soul prospers." God’s concern is the whole person.

May the God of peace himself sanctify you completely. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be healthy, even as your soul prospers.

I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.

Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

2.2

The natural self must be renewed The natural self must be renewed

"The natural man does not receive the things of God’s Spirit." To set the mind on the flesh is death; to set it on the Spirit is life and peace. Many inner sicknesses — bitterness, craving, indulgence, pride — are not overcome by willpower but renewed, little by little, by the Spirit.

Now the natural man doesn’t receive the things of God’s Spirit, for they are foolishness to him, and he can’t know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace;

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, that you may not do the things that you desire.

that you put away, as concerning your former way of life, the old man, that grows corrupt after the lusts of deceit; and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new man, who in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.

But if the Spirit of him who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

2.3

The source of healing: the blood of Christ The source of healing: the blood of Christ

The law says "the life of the flesh is in the blood." Scripture places the source of all healing at the cross: by His wounds we are healed; His blood cleanses our conscience. This is the deepest foundation of healing — first reconciliation with God, then the gradual restoring of the whole person.

For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that makes atonement by reason of the life.

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness; by whose stripes you were healed.

how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without defect to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Surely he has borne our sickness, and carried our suffering; yet we considered him plagued, struck by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed.

But to you who fear my name shall the sun of righteousness arise with healing in its wings. You will go out, and leap like calves of the stall.

2.4

God works through prayer — and through healers God works through prayer — and through healers

Jesus went about healing every disease. He also said, "Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick do." Hezekiah was healed because God heard his prayer — and because Isaiah had a poultice of figs laid on the boil. Luke, who wrote a Gospel, was himself a physician. Prayer and medicine are never opposed. Please never stop a prescribed treatment because you are praying.

even Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

When Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick do.

“Turn back, and tell Hezekiah the prince of my people, ‘Yahweh, the God of David your father, says, “I have heard your prayer. I have seen your tears. Behold, I will heal you. On the third day, you will go up to Yahweh’s house.

Isaiah said, “Take a cake of figs.” They took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered.

Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas greet you.

Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.

2.5

While healing waits: grace that is enough While healing waits: grace that is enough

Paul asked three times for his thorn to be removed, and the Lord answered: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Though the outward person decays, the inward is renewed day by day. We will not tell you that enough faith guarantees healing; we can only point to the Lord who stays with you in weakness.

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

Therefore we don’t faint, but though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day.

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; But those who wait for Yahweh will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

My son, attend to my words. Turn your ear to my sayings. Let them not depart from your eyes. Keep them in the center of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and health to their whole body.

My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

The Love of Christ

The source of all healing is a love given before we were ever made better.

Scripture says "God is love." That love is not an abstraction; it has a name, a body, and scars — the Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us while we were still sinners; His love is wider, longer, higher, and deeper than anyone can measure; nothing can separate us from it. To be touched by this love is where healing truly begins.

3.1

The source: He loved us first The source: He loved us first

It is not that we loved God, but that He loved us. This love existed before we ever looked for Him — "I have loved you with an everlasting love." Many wounds come from believing we must perform to be loved; the gospel says you were loved first.

By this God’s love was revealed in us, that God has sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins.

We love him, because he first loved us.

Yahweh appeared of old to me, saying, “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love. Therefore I have drawn you with loving kindness.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

See how great a love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God! For this cause the world doesn’t know us, because it didn’t know him.

3.2

Love on the cross Love on the cross

"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." Christ’s love was not given once we deserved it; while we were still sinners, He died for us. Paul wrote, "The life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me."

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I that live, but Christ lives in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me.

and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us, and washed us from our sins by his blood;

Now before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his time had come that he would depart from this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

Wide, long, high, and deep Wide, long, high, and deep

Paul prayed that the Ephesians would "comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, and know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge." This love is not only a truth to understand but something to be experienced — a love that fills.

that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Yahweh, your God, is among you, a mighty one who will save. He will rejoice over you with joy. He will calm you in his love. He will rejoice over you with singing.

“He arose, and came to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his loving kindness toward those who fear him.

3.4

Nothing can separate us Nothing can separate us

Trouble, hardship, sickness, death, things past and things to come — Paul lists every circumstance that might make someone think "God no longer loves me," and says none of them can separate us from the love of God. Perfect love casts out fear.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Could oppression, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love.

3.5

The loved become the loving The loved become the loving

Those healed by the love of Christ slowly become channels of healing for others. "The love of Christ compels us"; love is patient and kind. This is not a demand of the law but the life that naturally flows from having been loved.

For the love of Christ constrains us; because we judge thus, that one died for all, therefore all died. He died for all, that those who live should no longer live to themselves, but to him who for their sakes died and rose again.

Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Walk in love, even as Christ also loved you, and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance.

On healing of the body. We believe God still heals today, and that He works through doctors and medicine. Please do not stop any treatment because you are praying; and if healing does not come, it never means your faith was not enough.
